Kamala Harris - For California Attorney General 2010

Smart On Crime

Smart on Crime is more than a book on the shelf -- it is a strategy to both punish criminals and to also affirmatively prevent crime.

It is an approach to fighting crime that provides new solutions to old problems. Being Smart on Crime means being tough on violent criminals and holding them accountable for their actions, while at the same time working to prevent crime before it occurs.

The results of this Smart on Crime approach are clear. San Francisco's felony conviction rates are at the highest level in 15 years; convictions for gun, drug , and gang-related crimes have all increased. She has created new prosecution units focused on child assault, public integrity and environmental crimes, and has taken on perpetrators of financial crimes, mortgage fraud, identity theft and elder abuse. At the same time, as a result of her innovative re-entry initiatives, far fewer repeat offenders are cycling in and out of the criminal justice system in San Francisco.

Since her election in 2003, Kamala Harris has proven herself to be a District Attorney who not only stands her ground, but breaks new ground in the fight to fix our failing criminal justice system.

Her pledge is to move beyond the false choice of either being "tough" or "weak" on crime. Kamala Harris is Smart on Crime, and it's working.
