Kamala Harris - For California Attorney General 2010

B.O.E. Chairwoman Betty Yee Endorses Kamala Harris for Attorney General

Yee Praises Harris’ Experience as a Prosecutor, Commitment to Protecting California Consumers

SAN FRANCISCO – Betty T. Yee, Chairwoman of the State Board of Equalization, today announced her support for San Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris’ candidacy for California Attorney General.  In voicing her enthusiastic support, Yee praised Harris’ work and prosecutorial record and her commitment to consumer protections.

“Throughout her career as a courtroom prosecutor, Kamala Harris has demonstrated her commitment to protecting the most vulnerable among us,” said Yee. “As California’s Attorney General, Kamala Harris will put the law back on the side of everyday Californians, protecting distressed homeowners and families whose neighborhoods are under siege.”

“I am honored to have Chairwoman Yee, an accomplished public servant dedicated to ensuring that taxpayers are treated fairly, standing by my side in this campaign,” said Harris.  “As Attorney General, one of my top priorities will be prosecuting those who break consumer protection laws and the fraudsters who are responsible for this financial crisis.”

As San Francisco’s District Attorney, Harris has used her nearly 20 years of prosecutorial experience to focus intensively on fighting violent crime.  She increased felony conviction rates, expanded services to victims of crime and their families, created new prosecution divisions focused on child assault, public integrity and environmental crimes, and launched innovative initiatives to prevent re-offending.

Consumer protection is also a priority for Harris, who recently announced a three-part initiative to combat the growing problem of mortgage and financial fraud. The initiative includes prosecution of those who commit fraud, legislative advocacy, and public education to arm residents with the information they need to protect themselves from scams.

Since 2004 Betty Yee has represented the First District on the Board of Equalization, which includes the counties of Alameda, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Trinity, Yolo, and a portion of Santa Barbara.

Prior to joining the Board, she served as the Chief Deputy Director for Budget with the Department of Finance. Prior to her appointment to the Department of Finance, she served in the Legislature as Principal Consultant to the Assembly Committees on Appropriation, Budget, and Local Government, as well as to the Office of Research and Health and Human Services Committee in the Senate.

Preceding her legislative service, Ms. Yee served as a county public health commissioner and worked for and served on the boards of several non-profit organizations. A native of San Francisco, Ms. Yee received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her Master's Degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, and has been recognized for her work on state and local finance issues.
