Kamala Harris - For California Attorney General 2010

Silicon Valley Elected Leaders Endorse Kamala Harris for Attorney General

SAN FRANCISCO – Citing San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris’ record of innovation and vision for the future, Senator Elaine Kontominas Alquist (D-San Jose), former State Assemblymember Sally Lieber (D-Mountain View) and San Jose City Councilmembers Madison Nguyen and Ash Kalra today announced their support for Harris’ candidacy to become California’s next Attorney General.

"The Silicon Valley is the heart of innovation in California, and that is why we are supporting a candidate for Attorney General who has a distinguished record of innovative approaches to law enforcement," said Senator Elaine Kontominas Alquist. "As District Attorney, Kamala Harris has used her 20 years of prosecutorial experience to fight violent crime in San Francisco, and I know that as our state's next A.G., she will use the office to fight for all Californians."

Former State Assemblywoman Sally Lieber said, "Kamala Harris gets it. She understands the intersection between education, economic opportunity and protecting our environment, all of which are essential to our state's long-term success. She'll work with policymakers to make sure new laws and emerging issues are dealt with in a way that protects people and communities."

"As a former public defender for more than a decade and as Councilmember in Northern California's largest city, I have witnessed firsthand the revolving door that cycles criminals in and out of our neighborhoods," said San Jose City Councilmember Ash Kalra. "Kamala Harris will bring an experienced prosecutor's perspective to the unique challenges of public safety and the need to inject new ideas into our criminal justice system."

“As Chairwoman of the San Jose City Council’s Public Safety committee, I have seen Kamala Harris’ steadfast commitment to protecting our most vulnerable citizens,” said Councilmember Madison Nguyen, “and I look forward to working with Kamala Harris when she is California’s Attorney General.”

“I’m honored to have earned the support of these leaders who represent the Silicon Valley, our state’s hub of innovation and ideas,” said Harris. “As District Attorney, I’ve brought together my experience as a courtroom prosecutor and my commitment to embracing the most innovative, effective ideas to making our state a better place to live. Now, I want to take that same energy, innovation and change to the Attorney General’s office.”

As San Francisco’s District Attorney, Harris has used her nearly 20 years of prosecutorial experience to focus intensively on fighting violent crime. She increased conviction rates for serious and violent offenses, expanded services to victims of crime and their families, created new prosecution divisions focused on child assault, public integrity and environmental crimes, and launched innovative initiatives to prevent re-offending. To combat one of San Francisco’s biggest challenges, gun violence, she created a gun specialist team and implemented tough gun charging policies.

This work is paying off – the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office has more than doubled its trial conviction rate for gun felonies to 90 percent. Under her leadership, the office has sent 50 percent more serious and violent offenders to State Prison, has put more than 220 gang members behind bars and convicted more than 1,200 domestic violence offenders. According to the San Francisco Superior Court, the office’s overall felony conviction rate is at its highest point in 12 years.
