The San Francisco 49ers partnered with the San Francisco district attorney's office today to help teach local youth the importance of demonstrating respect for families, schools and communities, District Attorney Kamala Harris announced.

Youth participants of the district attorney's Changing the Odds program headed to the 49er's training camp, located at 4949 Centennial Blvd. in Santa Clara, this morning to watch practice and meet with former 49ers player Guy McIntyre and 49ers consultant and University of California, Berkley professor Harry Edwards.

The Changing the Odds program involves a three-week job readiness course that is followed by a six-week paid internship in the public or private sector. Participants are primarily low-income and at-risk youth ages 16 to 24 from San Francisco, who have brushed against the law by committing some type of low-level, non-violent crime, said Bilen Mesfin, spokeswoman for Kamala Harris.

Today's event was a partnership between the district attorney's program and the 49er's own RESPECT program, which brings Bay Area youth to a team practice in an effort to teach them the value of actively demonstrating respect for their families and communities.

"With this program, we want to give youth the tools they need not only to beat the odds, but also to change them,'' Harris said in a statement. "I thank the San Francisco 49ers for hosting these youth and giving them a first-hand look at the team's dedication to hard work and excellence.'
